The Morrigan by lindowyn-stock The Morrigan by lindowyn-stock
The Morrigan: The Washer at the Ford

From the Encyclopedia Mythica ([link])

During the Second Battle, the Morrigan "said she would go and destroy Indech son of De Domnann and 'deprive him of the blood of his heart and the kidneys of his valor', and she gave two handfuls of that blood to the hosts. When Indech later appeared in the battle, he was already doomed." (Rees 36)

Compare this to the Washer at the Ford, another guise of the Morrigan. The Washer is usually to be found washing the clothes of men about to die in battle. In effect, she is choosing who will die.

My interpretation of The Morrigan: the Washer at the Ford. Full View recommended.

For *dAPagan 's Gods and Goddesses contest. I also give the club full permission to repost this in their gallery.

Thanks so very much! This particular deity and I share a very close bond. That only really frightens those who don't understand, so I am really happy to read your comment. :) Thank you for understanding.

yes, I understand I share in common things with what others refer to as dark deities but they do nt understand that it is all part of a whole.

Great work! Have you read "A dirty Job" by Christopher Moore? The three Morrigan are characters in the book, and incredibly entertaining.

She's a gorgeous piece, I have one in my gallery too "the Battle Goddess" it's funny though, we all see her as death and destruction and an air and river based deity when in fact she is the sea lol.

This is a wonderfully creative illustration of the Morrigan. The faces of the men about to die in battle blended into the clothes on the line… brrrr, so creepy… Altogether a beautifully composed piece!
